Billy’s lower lip trembled. Then he laughed—a wet, surprised sound—and pointed at the machine. Then at Sheldon. Then he pressed button four, closed his eyes, and whispered: “Fff… rrr… en.”
Missy poked her head in. “Billy’s mom called. She was crying. Happy crying, apparently. Weird, right?”
A smile cracked Billy’s face—a real one, not the vacant grin Missy mocked. He pressed button three, took a breath, and forced out: “Sss… ah… duh.”
By Friday, the AAC Mk. 1 was born: a beige plastic box with six large buttons, a tiny speaker, and a crude LCD screen salvaged from a digital watch.
“Same thing, sometimes.”
