“ Jau —barley,” Kedar said. “The old one. Before wheat became king, barley fed our ancestors. It laughs at poor soil, at drought, at the harshest frost. It grows where other crops would die. And in spring, it gives us two gifts.”
Arjun bent down. The pods were small, each holding one or two wrinkled, beige peas. “So small,” he murmured.
Arjun was impatient. He loved the crash and boom of summer, the furious growth, the quick money of market-bound mangoes and eggplants. When the monsoon retreated and the air turned sharp and clean, he grew restless. His fields lay bare, cracked and exhausted. “Why do we sleep?” he demanded of his father, Kedar. “Why do we let the land lie fallow? Let us plant something quick, something fierce.” which crops are grown in winter season
That winter, Arjun did not fight the land. He sowed his father’s seeds with reverence. He watched the fog settle over the wheat like a blessing. He painted his home with cut mustard flowers. He ground chickpeas into flour with his mother. He shelled peas on cold afternoons and drank warm barley water at dusk.
“ Chana —chickpea,” Kedar said, brushing his hand over the leaves, which felt like fur. “The most modest of winter’s children. It does not need rich soil or much water. In fact, it improves the land. See those nodules on its roots? They trap nitrogen from the air and feed the earth. After chickpeas, the soil is stronger for the next crop.” “ Jau —barley,” Kedar said
“These are the crops of the cold,” he would say. “They ask for little, but they teach much. They teach us that winter is not an ending. It is the season of hidden life, of patient roots, and of the sweetest harvest—the one that waits for those who know how to listen.”
“Two?”
Next, they walked to a field that looked as if someone had spilled liquid sunlight across the dark earth. Brilliant yellow flowers, four petals each, danced on waist-high stems. The air was thick with a sharp, peppery scent that made Arjun’s eyes water.
