Goddess Parvati created a boy from sandalwood to guard her door. Lord Shiva, unaware of the boy, cut off his head in a fight. To soothe Parvati’s grief, Shiva replaced the boy’s head with that of an elephant, bringing him back to life. He named him Ganesha, the Remover of Obstacles, and declared he would be worshipped before all other gods. vinayaka chavithi katha english

The first creature they found was a mighty elephant. They severed its head and brought it to Lord Shiva. The Lord placed the elephant’s head onto the boy’s body and breathed life into him. Ganesha was reborn! To make amends and to celebrate the miracle, Lord Shiva bestowed upon him the status of being the first among all gods ( Ganapati – leader of the Ganas ). He declared that no auspicious work ( puja , wedding, new beginning) would ever be successful unless Ganesha was worshipped first. That’s why we welcome Lord Ganesha home today
