Tvaikonu Str. 5, Lv1007, Riga, Latvia Review

Inside, time had collapsed. A radio played a soft, crackling waltz from no visible source. On a Formica table sat nine place settings. Nine cups of tea, still steaming. Nine plates with untouched rye bread and herring. Nine chairs. And on each chair, a folded document—the same as the one she'd found. Same names. Same address. Same date: 1941. gada 14. jūnijs.

Marta Lapiņa. Tvaikonu str. 5, LV1007, Riga, Latvia. tvaikonu str. 5, lv1007, riga, latvia

The address was just a string of text in an old file: Tvaikonu Str. 5, LV1007, Riga, Latvia . No context. No date. Just a location. Inside, time had collapsed

Tvaikonu iela was a ghost of a street. Sandwiched between a new glass office tower and a vacant lot of weeds and rusted rebar, Number 5 was a building that shouldn't exist. It was a pre-war wooden tenement, leaning into its own decay like a tired old man. The paint was the color of a bruise. The windows, where they still had glass, reflected nothing. Nine cups of tea, still steaming

She folded the paper slowly, walked to the Daugava River, and threw it in. It sank immediately, like lead.

"You came back. You always come back."

Marta tried to scream. No sound left her mouth. The waltz grew louder, faster, warping into a distorted military march. The nine cups rattled. The tea turned to rust.
