Shower - Drain Frozen

"Do NOT pour standard Liquid Plumber or Drano into a frozen drain. I did. The liquid froze on top of the ice, creating a toxic, caustic ice lollipop. When it eventually thawed, the chemicals splashed back onto my legs. Burning + freezing = bad day. Stick to heat or RV antifreeze only." | Method | Effectiveness | Safety | Cost | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Heat Cable (Snaked in drain) | ✅✅✅✅✅ | ✅✅✅✅✅ | $30–$60 | | RV Antifreeze | ✅✅✅✅ | ✅✅✅✅ | $10–$20 | | Hair Dryer + Vacuum | ✅✅✅ | ✅✅✅ | Free | | Plumber (Emergency) | ✅✅✅✅✅ | ✅✅✅✅ | $300–$600 | | Chemical Drano | ❌ (Fails) | ❌ (Dangerous) | Waste of money |

Buy a 12-ft heat trace cable before winter hits. Threading it down the shower drain for 10 minutes is cheaper and faster than any other fix.

"I came up to the cabin for the weekend, ran the shower for 5 minutes, and suddenly water was backing up over my ankles. The drain was completely frozen solid. because that water sits in the pipe and re-freezes into a thicker plug. shower drain frozen

Pro tip: Do NOT use a propane torch or hair dryer directly on PVC—you’ll melt the pipe. This cable is the only safe solution for a frozen interior shower trap." By: NomadMike Date: Feb 2025

"My 5th wheel’s shower drain froze at 10°F. Since I couldn't run a heat cable inside the plastic underbelly, I poured a gallon of directly down the drain. Let it sit for 30 minutes. It slowly ate through the ice plug. Not a perfect fix (it left pink goo), but the water drained again. Deducted one star because you have to flush it 10 times before the smell goes away." ⭐ 2 Stars – "Plumber Emergency Service – Overcharged" By: DesperateInDetroit Date: Jan 2026 "Do NOT pour standard Liquid Plumber or Drano

"I called 'Rapid Rooter' for a frozen shower drain. They charged $450 for a 15-minute visit. The tech just poured hot water mixed with calcium chloride (ice melt) down the vent stack on the roof. It worked, but I could have done that myself. He warned that if the ice had cracked the cast iron trap, it would be $3k. Thankfully it didn't. "Saved my pipes. When the shower drain froze last week (single-digit temps outside), I bought a 12-foot (the kind for metal or PVC). I snaked the last 3 feet into the drain via the shower floor, wrapped the rest around the exposed pipe in the crawlspace, and plugged it in. Two hours later: The water slowly gurgled down. No burst pipes. When it eventually thawed, the chemicals splashed back

Lesson learned: If your shower drain freezes, your P-trap (the U-bend) has turned into an ice cube. You cannot snake it. You cannot use salt (it doesn't work in standing water). You will be showering in a plastic tub until the plumber arrives." By: DIY_Solver Date: Dec 2025
