"Locked out," Abella said flatly, holding up her single slipper as if it explained everything.

Marcus grinned, leaning his guitar case against her wall. "Only if you promise not to lock me out."

"I need a miracle. My phone’s inside."

She shuffled down to the building’s lobby, hoping the super might still be on-site. No luck. The only other person there was a guy named Marcus, a quiet neighbor from 4B who she’d only ever exchanged awkward elevator nods with. He was sitting on the lobby bench, scrolling through his phone, a bass guitar case leaning against his knee.

Twenty minutes later, they were both kneeling in front of her apartment door. Marcus had a tension wrench and a rake pick from his "emergency kit" (which he kept in a mint tin). Abella held her breath as he worked the lock, the tiny clicks echoing like a heartbeat.

"Deal."

It was a crisp autumn evening when Abella Danger realized she’d made a critical error. She’d stepped outside her downtown apartment to take out the recycling, the door clicking shut behind her with a soft, definitive thud. Her keys, phone, and wallet were on the kitchen counter, right next to her half-eaten bowl of ramen.

That night, the ramen was hot, the conversation easy, and the click of the lock was forgotten. Instead, something else had started to open.
