Lena’s second reaction was curiosity. She slipped the card into her pocket and said nothing at dinner. Mark was distracted, pushing his peas around the plate. He kept glancing at his phone, then at the clock on the wall—the one he’d set five minutes fast to “encourage punctuality.”
But the expiration date was yesterday.
