In the northern states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Kashmir, the mercury plummets below freezing. Dal Lake freezes over; the passes of Ladakh become sealed fortresses of snow. It is also the time for Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra, where giant idols of the elephant-headed god are immersed in the sea.
