Sandwiched right in the middle of that shift is a movie that doesn’t get enough credit for being an absolute blast: John Singleton’s Four Brothers (2005).

Here is why Four Brothers holds up better than almost any of its contemporaries. The set-up is classic pulp fiction: Evelyn Mercer, a kind-hearted woman who adopted four troubled boys from the streets, is murdered during a convenience store holdup. When the police write it off as a random act of violence, her sons come home for the funeral. Let’s be honest: The mid-2000s were a weird
